Webcam Video Conferencing
NESC has deployed Vidyo technology (http://www.vidyo.com) as our preferred method of supporting web cam based video connectivity. Any district that was part of either RUS1, RUS2 automatically has access to the system. If you were not part of the RUS grant projects you can still gain access by calling us and we will work out a trial period for you to test and see if the system meets your needs. After which, a small Erate discount qualified charge will be required.
Making Calls to and from you Vidyo web camera
Calling is easy to do once you understand how to form the calling number. The calling number is made up of various dialing elements; calling destination (in form of E.164 or IP), gateway, gateway delimiter, point to point delimiter and extension. We will cover several ways on how various calls are sent and received using both E.164 and IP address. First however we will cover the various dialing elements.
Dialing Elements
Here is a list of each of these that NESC uses in our implementation
Calling Destination
E.164 - formatted similar to a normal (typically 10 digit) telephone number such as 2182794480 (NESC's end point)
IP - Address are formated in 4 octets in the following way ###.###.###.### (ex 66.199.223.241) Note: The leading zero's can be dropped on each of the octets to shorten the string. Additionally while 10 digits are typical, Internet 2 dialing patterns can differ.
Gateway Prefix
2182794466 or 91 - CIF resolution - Typical low resolution found in calls using skype and other older camera capabilities. Requires the lowest amount of bandwidth (typically 384k) by the endpoint but can result in a granular appearence in the video.
2182794467 or 92 - SD resolution - Standard Definition resolution that was used for years in the video teleconference industry. Typical bandwith usage between 384kbps to 768kbps. Produces good video quality and higher frame rates (30fps)
2182794468 or 93 - HD resolution - High Definition resolution is the current prefered high (CD) quality video. Typical bandwidth requires from 768kbps to 1600kbps and produces frame rates from 30fps to 60fps. Note that this will quickly become your preferred method of connection using Vidyo once you have experienced the difference.
Gateway Delimiter
## - Used on any outbound E.164 calls and ALL calls involving the use of an IP address.
MyRoom Delimiter (Group Conferencing)
* - Determines if the call is connected to your MyRoom session. When used, other sites either Vidyo or offnet can join the group conference call. When not used, the call is a point to point and others can not join your call. NOTE: This is only used on inbound calls to you.
Extension
######## - A numeric extension up to 8 digits long and includes your ISD number and your internal traditional phone extension.
So now that we have covered the various elements, how do we initiate (outbound) and receive (inbound) calls using the Vidyo web camera system.
Vidyo to Vidyo Extension Calling
This is the simplest form of calling since all parties are on the same system.
Only the internal extension or the persons name is required to make these calls.
Via the web based portal, http://vportal.nenet.us , when you start entering the ISD number, you will see the system starts to display and extension that begins with that string. You can then either complete the dialing string or select the person you wish to connect with.
For example; NESC's ISD number is 927, the internal extension for Melissa Cox is - 2109. Her resulting Vidyo extension number is 9272109
Point to Point (Call Direct)
Just dial the extension or type in the users name you are trying to connect and click on the "CALL DIRECT" button.
Group Conferencing (MyRoom)
Click on the MyRoom in the Contacts, then click on the "Join Room" button.
Once joined you can then invite others (other Vidyo users and H.323/E.164) through the "Add Participants" button via the web portal. You can also send an invite for guests and others to join your personal group conference.
OUTBOUND CALLING
How to make calls from your Vidyo web camera to other H.323 systems;
Dialing Elements; Gateway, Gateway Delimiter(##) and Calling Destination.
To call other systems you need to combine the Gateway prefix, gateway delimiter and the calling destination.
For example an HD call, using the gateway prefix 93, to a conference lobby that is available 24 hours a day on NESC's Codian HD MCU can be made by either of the following calling numbers.
93##2182794460 or 93##66.199.223.72
INBOUND CALLING - USING E.164
NOTE: E.164 is ONLY available to sites located in MN and connected to one of the various educational and/or state networks.
How outside sites can call (Point to Point) your Vidyo web camera extension.
If the site is part of any of the MN State wide video networks they can use E.164 as the preferred method. The call requires the 10 digit resolution prefix and your internal extension. Remember the use of delimiters depending on the codec or mcu that is initiating the inbound call may be required to form the calling pattern.
From this information we can form the following example;
An external site within the MN state network wants to connect with Melissa Cox (ext 9272109). Using E.164 shortens the dialing pattern and results in the following calling patttern; 21827944689272109
How outside sites can call your MyRoom group conference.
We just add the MyRoom delimiter(*) to the above example to have the inbound call join the group conference;
2182794468*9272109
INBOUND CALLING - USING IP ADDRESS
Available when E.164 fails or is not available.
Calls using this method need to know the Vidyo Gateway IP Address in order to form the calling number. In addition, in order to shorten the dialing pattern, we also substitute the E.164 portion of the gateway prefix for the much shorter 2 digit code.
Vidyo Gateway IP - 66.199.223.67
How outside sites can call (Point to Point) your Vidyo web camera extension.
An HD call in this case to Melissa Cox at NESC would be as follows;
66.199.223.67##939272109
How outside sites can call your MyRoom group conference.
We just add the MyRoom delimiter(*) to the above example to have the inbound call join the group conference;
66.199.223.67##93*9272109
